Dylan's 8th birthday

2020 January 06 - 12

We had a small break from tradition this year and started the celebrations with a bowling trip instead of pirate golf. This was followed by a meal in McDonald's where Dylan had his favourite; chicken nuggets, bbq sauce, chips, water and a toy!

The actual day is a day we won't forget in a hurry and not least because, unbeknownst to us, it would be Dylan's last birthday.

The day started off well although a bit rushed because it was a school day. Dylan didn't open any presents before school as, I had agreed to do some filming for The Brain Tumour charity to highlight Dylan's story and they were coming that afternoon to film me, the boys being collected from school and Dylan opening his birthday presents.

That afternoon, during filming, I received a call from Dylan's school. He'd been accidentally knocked over in the playground and, due to his adrenal insufficiency, had suffered a potentially fatal adrenal crisis. An ambulance had been called and so I rushed to the school to administer Dylan's rescue medication if needed. True to form, by the time I arrived, Dylan had started to recover with oral medication and by the time the ambulance arrived, he was fit as a fiddle and happy to return to his class.

That afternoon, both classes in his year group had music and the whole year sang Dylan 'happy birthday'. According to his TA, he was a bit star struck but enjoyed the experience.

As arranged, the team from The Brain Tumour charity accompanied me on the school pick up and Dylan was excited to see the cameraman again. Then we returned home to open presents and play with Play-Doh. Dylan was particularly pleased with his Ryan's Toy Review giant surprise egg. After this we went to pizza express with our friends.

Then, on the 12th Dylan had his last ever birthday party. Fortunately, it was at his favourite place, Zoomania , was well attended by his family, friends and favourite mascot Zilo and had his favourite cake, a chocolate one with a Tom and Jerry design.

Had he lived, I'd already booked Zoomania for 2021 as he wouldn't be happy with anywhere else!
